Orlando Vacation - What You Should Know About Orlando Vacations

You are probably aware that Orlando vacations revolve around theme parks, but this beautiful city has much more to offer the visitor than just thrilling rides. Orlando Town is also your destination for museums, galleries, historical places, edifices, flea markets, churches and much more. Florida in general has a long history of attracting tourists and this is the busiest city with more and more people visiting each year in a place that will satisfy even the most demanding of individuals.

If you enjoy shopping then you will love Orlando; it has plenty of malls and stores like Outdoor World which is so large it contains a 17,000 gallon aquarium and you could spend all day there. More than 35-million people each year come to enjoy a vacation in Orlando at the many attractions and events that make it a great place to visit. The Central Florida Zoo for instance only opened back in 1975 and was owned by the Sanford Fire Department prior to that but is now the home to over four hundred animals. The Central Florida Zoological Park and Botanical Gardens is dedicated to preserving the beauty and wonder of animals including their habitats.

Then there are the works of Louis Tiffany whose famous collection is housed here in the Morse Museum of American Art. For aficionados of Tiffany art, this is the place to visit with the largest display anywhere in the world, including jewelry, paintings, glass, pottery and ornaments. No adult, despite any thoughts to the opposite, could go to Orlando and find nothing of interest as the range of attractions for both the young and old is huge. The choice of evening entertainment for vacations in Orlando is as diverse as the range of activities available during daylight hours with themed shows to Disney's Pleasure Island or City walk at Universal.

Another popular attraction is the Orlando Science Center and is in fact one of the largest buildings of its type allowing the visitor access to ten huge exhibition halls. If your preference is in railways then the International Trolley and Train Museum on International drive will be a pleasant surprise with 14 trains running continuously and three waterfalls in a space of about 4,000 square feet. For something a little different there's the Titanic Exhibition which tells the story of the ill fated Ocean Liner performed by a character from the ship; the displays contain some original salvaged items and at times the tour is very moving.

A quieter more relaxing time can be found within the grounds of Lake Eola Park where you can enjoy over forty three acres of wonderful parkland which includes a boating lake for the more energetic. Not all theme parks in Orlando are based purely on rides as the fantastic Seaworld will attest but if you want rides then you have the Disney resort theme parks and Universal studios too. To make the most of your Orlando vacation try to visit outside of traditional holiday periods if you want to avoid the crowds.

How to Find a Home in Orlando for Rental During Vacation

Orlando is a beautiful city to visit at any time of the year. And because there are hundreds of things to do in Orlando, a weekend vacation is simply not enough. If you want your vacation in this city to be meaningful even in the smallest sense, consider staying a week at the very least. And to save on money, consider procuring a home rental instead of having to pay the expensive daily rates of hotels.

Home Rental vs. Hotel Stay in Orlando

LOCATION - If you live living close to where all the action is, hotels are usually strategically located downtown but it's possible for you to find homes in the city proper as well. If, however, you're after a suburban lifestyle during your Orlando vacation, a home rental would be more appropriate than staying in a hotel.

COSTS - If you are going to stay for a week or longer in Orlando, you'll find accommodation costs to be more affordable by renting a home. Also, there are lots of costs inclusive in hotel rates while home rentals generally charge you for the cost of the place itself alone. Also, landlords of Orlando home rentals will rarely ask you to limit the number of people living in their property, but the same can't be said for hotel management.

COMFORT - If you're going to rent a home in an exclusive residential community in Orlando, it's possible for you to enjoy all the amenities and more that you can expect from a hotel. Of course, expecting 24-hour room service might be too much.

Tips on Finding a Home in Orlando for Rental during Vacation

During your Orlando vacation, you'll no doubt encounter various types of home rentals so lack of choice definitely won't be a problem. Orlando home rentals can generally be divided into the following broad categories:

Estates and Mansions - You can rent out a mansion and live like royalty in Orlando for a week. Most of these home rentals will provide you with a range of luxurious amenities that will rival those being offered in hotels. Better yet, you can enjoy all of these in utmost privacy.

Resort Home Rentals - Orlando resorts also offer home rentals to family vacationers wishing to enjoy fun in public places. These resorts generally provide guests entertainment outlets such as restaurants, clubhouse, arcades, sports and fitness facilities, and of course pools and other water activities. This is also a good option for people traveling with several families and who wish to reside in one community or common area.

Condominium and Townhouse Rentals - If residing in a place that reminds you of home is what it would take to make you enjoy your Orlando vacation, then you need not worry because this city also offers condominium and townhouse rentals at affordable rates.

Consider the following factors to further narrow the field:
SIZE OR SPACE - Just how much space do you need or desire? Living in a cramped room in a hotel or a rented apartment might cause you to lose some of your enthusiasm for your Orlando vacation.

LOCATION - Try looking for a home that's located as closely as possible to the majority of tourist attractions that you're planning to visit.

FEATURES - How many bedrooms does it have? Is its dining room separate from the kitchen? Does the home rental have a pool? What about a garden? How many car slots do you need in a garage? How many bathrooms are there?

SERVICES - What kind of services do you believe you can't live without? Do you wish for 24-hour security? Are you after round the clock room service? How about the laundry and the cooking? Are you willing to do these chores or would living in a hassle-free hotel environment better for you?

Once you've decided on a particular home rental, make sure that you pay a visit prior to your vacation or have photos of the home rental sent to you. Negotiate diligently with your agent and imply that you have other options to consider. Review the home rental contract provided and don't hesitate to ask questions if you find any of the stipulations confusing. Ask about reservation and payment requirements.

And lastly, if you're truly sure about your choice then what's else is there to do but to sign the check?

Enjoy a Night Out at a 1930's Style Dinner Show in Orlando

If you are in Orlando and looking for an Italian restaurant with a difference, then a night out at Capone's Dinner and Show is certain to meet your expectations and more.

Advertised as a "blast from the past" this is a theater restaurant that harks back to 1930's gangland Chicago. Each night there is a musical comedy revue with actors garbed in period style costumes. After a successful 15 year run, a new show is currently on offer.

The waiters are part of the show and stay in character throughout the whole evening, sporting gangster names, and speaking in gangster slang. There is also a lot of audience participation in the show. In fact, you can't enter without giving a secret password, just like in the speakeasy bars of the 1930s.

But there is more than music and laughs at Capone's. While you are watching the show you are treated to a full meal. The menu features an Italian food buffet as well as some standard American dishes, and you can eat as much as you like. Included with the meal are unlimited draft beer, soda and alcoholic drinks.

In addition to your normal family night out, Capone's also has special offers. If you have a group of 15 or more you can take advantage of special group rates. The restaurant is also a good venue to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and engagements. In fact the restaurant encourages making wedding proposals there promising that "it will make your engagement night a night she will never forget."

Here is the basic information about Capone's Dinner and Show: It is located at Kissimmee-St. Cloud/Osceola County , 4740 West US 192 Kissimmee, FL 34746, and you can call them at these numbers: 407-397-2378 and 800-220-8420. The daily show starts at 7:30 pm

On Thanksgiving Day there is a special meal and from Thanksgiving to Christmas there is a Christmas Show. On New Year's Eve there are two shows, an early bird special and a later show which features a champagne toast at midnight.

So, if you want to have some fun while vacationing in Orlando, visit Capone's and whisper quietly to the guard at the door, "Mark sent me!"

Treating a Stroke

It can be difficult to understand how a physician might go about treating such a catastrophic event as a stroke. However, using modern techniques, healthcare professionals can recognize the signs of a stroke, identify the major contributing problems, and address these issues with specifically targeted treatment approaches. In this way, a properly executed treatment plan can provide stroke victims with an opportunity to stop further brain damage and begin the healing and therapy process.

There are different treatment methods to address the two main types of stroke. For strokes caused by a clot, thrombolysis is a pharmaceutical treatment that breaks down the clot affecting the brain, giving the patient a chance to recover from the lost flow of blood. This treatment method has become particularly popular due to its effectiveness and pharmaceutical approach. However, there are complications involved, which may be especially triggered if a patient requires thrombolysis multiple times.

Another major treatment option for those suffering a stroke caused by a brain clot is the use of stenting and angioplasty. Similar to the procedure used to repair the heart during severely damaging cardiac events, stenting in the brain has been proven to be a viable option and effective procedure for restoring blood flow back into the brain.

In order to combat a hemorrhagic stroke, which may actually be worsened through treatment options associated with clot-based, or ischemic, strokes, physicians generally must take a surgical approach. Without being able to determine and repair the source of the bleeding into the brain, there are not many possible treatment programs available to successfully fight the blood loss caused by these strokes.

Knowing and understanding proper treatment methods is an integral part of placing a patient in a position to fully recover after any necessary therapy. A failure to do so may not be the result of chance, but may have been caused by a negligent physician.

Arrested for Trafficking in Oxycodone Or Hydrocodone

As a Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney, I have received dozens of phone calls from individuals whose family members were recently arrested for Trafficking in Oxycodone or in Hydrocodone in Florida. Inevitably, each individual asks the same three questions:

1. (My brother) takes oxycodone (or hydrocodone) to alleviate back pain. He was only arrested with a few pills. How can he be charged with "Trafficking?"

2. Is the minimum penalty for Trafficking in Oxycodone or Trafficking in Hydrocodone really three (3) years in prison? and

3. Why is (my brother) being held on such a high bond?

Florida Statute 893.135(1)(c) reads in part: Any person who knowingly sells, purchases, manufactures, delivers, or brings into this state, or is knowingly in ACTUAL OR CONSTRUCTIVE POSSESSION of four (4) grams of more of oxycodone or hydrocodone or four (4) grams or more of ANY MIXTURE CONTAINING oxycodone or hydrocodone commits a felony of the first degree punishable by up to thirty years in prison.

If the quantity involved:

1. is four (4) grams or more, but less than fourteen (14) grams, such person shall be sentenced to a mandatory term of imprisonment of three (3) years, and the defendant shall be ordered to pay a fine of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00).

2. is fourteen (14) grams or more, but less than twenty-eight (28) grams, such person shall be sentenced to a mandatory term of imprisonment of fifteen (15) years, and the defendant shall be ordered to pay a fine of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00).

3. is twenty-eight (28) grams or more, but less than thirty (30) kilograms, such person shall be sentenced to a mandatory term of imprisonment of twenty-five (25) years, and the defendant shall be ordered to pay a fine of five-hundred thousand dollars ($500,000.00).

The Florida Legislature designated any individual in possession of four (4) grams or more of oxycodone or hydrocodone OR four (4) grams or more of any mixture containing oxycodone or hydrocodone guilty of trafficking in drugs, regardless of whether the individual was using oxycodone or hydrocodone for their own personal use. The criminal charge is based upon the TOTAL WEIGHT of the drugs, even though each pill likely contains both illegal and legal substances (i.e. Acetaminophen). For example, if one (1) "Lortab" pill weighs 650 mg (although it only contains ten (10) mg of hydrocodone), then seven (7) "Lortab" pills constitutes trafficking (650 mg x 7 pills = 4.6 grams).

Trafficking or Possession charges can be avoided or reduced, however, if the arrestee can show that the specific drug seized by law enforcement was lawfully obtained from a practitioner or pursuant to valid prescription. Oftentimes, upon a criminal defense attorney's request, the State Attorney's Office will ask their chemist to compare the milligrams of the drug and ID numbers engraved on the drug with the milligrams listed on the prescription and the ID numbers of the pharmacy that dispensed the prescription to ensure an exact match. Accordingly, individuals arrested with "black market" pills or pills obtained from friends or neighbors will not be able to prove that the pills were lawfully obtained, even if the individual has a valid prescription for the same drug. Additionally, even an individual is self-medicating Oxycodone or Hydrocodone for a legitimate injury, the State of Florida does not deem this "excuse" as a valid defense.

The standard bond for trafficking in drugs is typically in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, or at least comparable to the fine required under the relevant trafficking statute. Oftentimes, an experienced criminal defense attorney can negotiate reduced bond conditions with the State Attorney's Office or file a Motion to Reduce Bond with the Court.

In the event you or a family member is arrested for Trafficking in Oxycodone or Trafficking in Hydrocodone, immediately contact an experienced criminal defense attorney. As mentioned previously, the crime of Trafficking in Oxycodone or Trafficking in Hydrocodone carries a minimum mandatory prison sentence. A minimum mandatory prison sentence means that the Judge cannot waive the prison sentence (barring certain limited exceptions); only the State Attorney's Office can waive the prison sentence.

Florida Alimony Law and Child Support Law Changes You Need to Know

Several changes to alimony and child support have been passed by the Florida Legislature and approved by the Governor, this past year. The Florida alimony law changes are effective as of July 1st, 2010. The Florida child support law changes will not become effective until October 1st, 2010. These revisions to our existing laws are in some cases merely a codification of certain principles we have been following based upon interpretation by the courts. In other instances the changes are somewhat substantial.

I will focus on the alimony revisions, since these changes are now law and apply to any dissolution filed after July 1st, 2010. The statute does indicate that these changes cannot be a basis for a modification of an existing alimony award prior to July 1st, 2010.

There are now listed four different types of alimony awards. They are; rehabilitative alimony, permanent alimony, bridge the gap alimony and durational alimony. Bridge the gap and durational alimony are two new forms of alimony that are officially recognized in the law. Prior to these changes, alimony awards consistent with the terms of durational or bridge the gap were often still being implemented in cases, but were not necessarily recognized by statute.

The new law has also defined certain areas in an attempt to clear up any confusion or ambiguities and limit certain discretion of the courts. There is now a rebuttable presumption (one that can still be overcome with credible evidence) as to how a marriage is defined based upon the length of marriage.

The following is now presumed:
Short term marriage is less than 7 years.
Moderate term marriage is greater than 7 years but less than 17.
Long term marriage is greater than 17 years.

The length of marriage is determined from the date of marriage until the date of the filing of an action for a Dissolution of Marriage. It appears that the date of separation is not going to be a factor in determining the length of a marriage. The following are the two new additional "types" of alimony:

Bridge the gap alimony is defined as an award of support to assist a party in making a transition from being married to being single and cannot exceed 2 years in duration. In addition, this award of alimony cannot be modified as to either the amount or the duration of time.

Durational alimony may be awarded when permanent alimony is inappropriate. It will be awarded for marriages of either short or moderate duration, provided that a party has the need for economic assistance. This award may not exceed the length of the marriage.

For the most part, with limited exceptions, permanent alimony will be awarded in a long term marriage.

I just touched upon the significant changes which have taken place. There are numerous other changes which I have not addressed.

Orlando Vacation Tips to Make Your Stay More Enjoyable

When you go to Orlando we assume you will try at least one of the many theme parks. As noted they only have seven of the top ten in the country. Here are some time tested and very real tips to make your stay more enjoyable and save your sanity.

1. Realize that you will be spending a lot of time waiting in unshaded lines so be prepared with lots of water, sunscreen, sunshades (hats), and sunglasses. The sun can be brutal. If you get burned to a crisp your first day, the rest of your trip might be ruined. Dehydration and sunstroke are very real possibilities that can be avoided.

2. Also realize that walking a lot is in the cards, so dress comfortably including comfortable walking shoes-not ones you are wearing for the first time. It is hard for most people to visualize the enormity of the parks.

3. Try doing a little planning. Most people eat lunch between 1130 and 100 and dinner from 430-630 or so. Plan on beating the crowds for lunch and dinner by going earlier or later than most folks and if available take advantage of the Priority Seating Option. It will save you from waiting in that line for long.

4. Most people head to Tomorrowland when they get to the park. For that very reason try heading left when you walk in to Adventureland. Realize too that you will not be able to see everything your first day and maybe not even your second day. So set some priorities and some monetary limits.

5. Security is very good at most theme parks but realize that not everyone there wants you to spend your money some want to take it from you. Don't carry wads of cash. ATM's are all over the place.

6. You can try and remember where you parked but it is best to write it down on something that won't get lost.

7. A lot of rides have height restrictions for safety reasons. Knowing what they are and the restricted rides may save you some frustration.

Try using these tips to make your vacation more enjoyable.

Take An Online American History Course

Broward College, a state college located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a great choice for students whose busy schedules require them to take some of their college credits as online courses. Even if you do not live in Florida, you can take online courses at Broward College. Taking online courses allows you to hold a job and take care of home and family responsibilities while still managing your colleges coursework from your home computer. An example of an online class offered is AMH2010, History of the United States to 1877.

History of the United States will fulfill a history requirement and also fulfill three credits. The class size is small, with about 25 students, so that you can receive individualized attention from your professor and communicate with your classmates on an online discussion board.

This course is an early American history class focusing on the pre-Columbus era to the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. Students will learn about the development of early American society, examining the emerging nation from political, economic, and cultural angles. The main topics covered will be the Colonial period, the American Revolution, Nationalism, the antebellum period, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

Students will learn to think critically while reading about and discussing early American history. Online class discussion topics will facilitate conversation and ideas surrounding key topics. Regular quizzes will test students for absorption and understanding of important concepts.

Students will also complete frequent writing assignments both to further their understanding of the materials they are working with and to improve their academic writing skills. Writing assignments will allow students to interact with and analyze history, as well as to make connections between events and form ideas about the emergence of American culture. They will develop their writing and research abilities, which will be useful in other history classes and in their academic careers.

In order to be successful in History of the United States to 1877 and any other online course at Broward College, students will have to have an up-to-date home computer that meets Broward's standards. The college recommends a Mac OSX or Windows XP operating system with a 1.0 GHz or higher processor speed. It is mandatory that students have good internet access to be ready for e-learning.

Though students may enjoy the flexibility of taking History of the United States to 1877 on their personal computers, it is important to be aware that this and any other online class requires personal discipline in order to succeed. Rather than participating in class meetings, students will have to be motivated to learn materials on their own. They will do best if they keep to a strict schedule of reading and studying, and if they are diligent about completing class assignments.

If you want to earn a degree in South Florida and take classes in Broward County, taking History of the United States to 1877 online through Broward College will be a convenient and enjoyable experience for the right student. You can balance your coursework with your busy lifestyle as you discover fascinating topics in American history. If you are interested in this class, check out some of the other online offerings that allow you to work on your college degree from the comfort of home.

Fort Lauderdale Attorneys Tell All - How To Win In A Medical Malpractice Case

No Holds Barred: An interview with a Fort Lauderdale Attorney about Medical Malpractice

Did he ever score a win? He smiled, with the knowing smile of Mona Lisa. Medical Malpractice cases have seen days in court and most of the victims have been rewarded relief, however no amount of financial reward can ever compensate for the loss of a future, atop an operating table.

Joshua, 19, lost not just a limb, but a life-long career; Daniel, the chance to see his son’s smile again.Medical malpractice cases have gripped the headlines in the past years; most recently, a plaintiff who was a promising football player, went to see a surgeon for his chronic back pain. When he woke up he can no longer play, nor walk ever again. $11.7 million was huge payback, when an Atlanta Circuit Court Judge ruled in his favor, but to be confined in a wheelchair for life was never a happy bargain. Nevertheless, Joshua was thankful that he now has money to bankroll a future, whatever is left of it, for him.

How difficult it is to win, or lose in a medical malpractice case?

A Fort Lauderdale Attorney, who has built an expertise on medical malpractice, came forth with some answers to most frequently-asked questions:

Q: What qualifies an act as a medical malpractice

A: When a negligent act, which causes injury to a patient receiving medical care is caused by a medical professional, such as a doctor, nurse, therapist, hospital technician, hospital worker, dentist or by anybody else in similar category, there is medical malpractice. For more details about medical malpractice, Fort Lauderdale Lawyers have the expertise.

Q: Is every negligent act committed by a medical practitioner, a medical malpractice A: For a negligent act to be considered a medical malpractice, three (3) requisites must concur:

1.) the medical professional has a duty to provide medical care to someone

2.) the negligent act caused the breach of duty

3.) an injury directly resulted from such breach. Fort Lauderdale Attorneys encourage those harmed by a medical malpractice to seek immediate legal intervention; filing of the case has specific time period, which varies from state to state.

Q: What is “standard care”?

A: “Standard care” is the yardstick used to determine if the negligent act committed by a medical professional is actionable or not. The negligent act should be established as a willful deviation from “standard care” that a prudent and reasonable medical professional would give to patients in his care, under similar circumstances.

Q: Define a “patient”?

A patient is one who receives medical attention, or under medical care.

Q: What is the first step that a plaintiff should undertake when filing legal action for medical malpractice?

A: Through his counsel, the plaintiff should file a “Certificate of Merit”. This is a document, which describes that before a medical malpractice case is pursued in court by the plaintiff, all his relevant records and information about the case underwent close scrutiny and evaluation by a medical expert; when evidence purports merit to file an action in court, lawyer for the plaintiff should file first a “certificate of merit”. Florida Malpractice Lawyers [http://www.booneanddavis.com/areas.php] explain that “Certificate of Merit” is a pre-requisite to filing a medical malpractice case in court.

Q: Is there a prescribed period for filing a medical malpractice case?

A: When in Florida, Florida Injury Lawyers take on medical malpractice cases with sense of urgency. More than the financial reward that they could win in favor of their client, they also believe that a speedy dispensation of justice, appease the tragedy that falls upon every victim of medical malpractice. You should talk to your lawyer immediately, detailing to him relevant information regarding your association with the defendant before, during and after the incident. Specific periods for filing, varies from state to state.

Q: In a nose job, if the patient does not get the “ perfect” nose she wanted, can it give rise to a medical malpractice case?

A: No. For a medical malpractice case to prosper in court, there should be a deviation or breach of duty to render standard care upon the patient, and such breach caused an injury to the patient. A less-than-perfect nose job does not merit an actionable negligent act.

Q: Doctors make their patients sign a “consent form” before they perform a clinical procedure. In the event of medical malpractice, does the consent form affect the outcome of the legal action?

A : No, it does not prevent the aggrieved party from seeking relief for damages, provided the requisites for a medical malpractice case are met.

Q: Is medical malpractice a “winnable” case?

Again, that knowing smile.

Don't pay until you win your case. Florida Lawyers guarantee offering for over 25 years.

Why Move To Fort Myers

You probably have heard by now that Fort Myers, Florida is one of the top relocation destinations in all United States. What are the reasons behind this growing trend? This article will try to explain them from the perspective of personal and business reasons. Let's start with the personal relocation.

One good reason would have to be the location of the city. The exquisite Caloosahatchee River, which is a part of the Intracoastal Waterway, flows through Lee County, offering a wide array of recreational possibilities, along with gorgeous waterfront properties that all wait for their new owners. Here, you have the opportunity to travel from the Gulf of Mexico across the state to the Atlantic Ocean.

Another reason why you could move to Fort Myers would be for the diversity of the outlet shops, shopping malls and the so-called "super stores" which grow in number each and every single day in this fast developing city.

For those of you who enjoy nature and fresh air, the city of Fort Myers is the home to many natural wonders and wildlife, here are just a few relevant examples: lots of ecological parks, playful dolphins, miles and miles of sandy beaches, lots of species of freshwater and saltwater fish, mild-mannered manatees, wading herons, soaring eagles, all creating an epic paradise that you won't find elsewhere in the United States.

Yet another reason why moving to Fort Myers would be a great idea, is thanks to the weather which is just about perfect. In January the temperatures are rarely cold, April & May are balmy, while from August to December it is hot, but yet very bearable.

Moving on, if you are the owner of a business, here are some of the reasons why relocating to Fort Myers would be a great idea.

As mentioned earlier, Lee County is located on the Gulf of Mexico and has easy access to the Southwest International Airport as well as the Interstate-75 from all area. To get to Fort Lauderdale or Tampa, you need to travel only 2.5 hours, providing easy access to shipping across the country or around the entire globe.

In the city, you will find great support for incoming businesses as the Horizon Council, which is a private group dedicated to bringing economic expansion to the area works with the Lee County Department of Economic Development, serving the community of business affairs there.

In Fort Myers you will also have access to some of the most skilled employees as the city is the home of the new Florida Gulf Coast University, a few universities and junior colleges, along with various training facilities and programs for residents.

Business owners have many opportunities to get directly involved with the local community through non-profit organizations or other businesses, professional and trade associations.

Last but certainly not least, many businesses in the Forbes 500 have selected the city of Fort Myers for headquarters or branches relocation.

As you can see, regardless if you are a simple person or a business owner, relocating to Fort Myers, Florida can be a very wise decision to improve the quality of your life and/or business.

Florida Old Style Homes

As an interior decorator and design consultant, I became fascinated with the history of Florida and Old Florida style homes, including the Old Florida Cracker style home. So I began my research into the back roads of old Florida. I found that Florida is not only rich in heritage, but also rich in culture and architectural design.

Florida is a kaleidoscope of many nationalities like Spanish, British, French, Italian and Cuban and with them came many influences on architectural design styles. Settlers also came from other states like South Carolina, New York and Louisiana. This diversity of cultures influenced the architecture and decorating style of many buildings, historical hotels and Florida homes.

Florida's first settlers were actually Native American Indians. Ponce De Leon, a Spanish explorer, was the first to discover Florida in 1513, landing in St. Augustine, the nations oldest city. St. Augustine is also the home to the Casa Monica hotel, a Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque style hotel.

Fernandina Beach on the Florida East coast touts a Floridian seaport village with cobblestone streets adorned with Victorian style homes and beachside cottages.

The Breakers Hotel in West Palm Beach is a grand Old Florida Italian Renaissance hotel, built by real estate and railroad tycoon Henry Flagler in 1894. 75 artisans were brought in from Italy to complete the magnificent paintings of the main lobby ceiling.

Another popular Florida home-style design was the Renaissance and Mediterranean style homes found in both old Winter Park and Coral Gables neighborhoods. Also, mid-century architecture, based on Frank Lloyd Wright's ideas, was popular in Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale.

The Miami national historic district reflects 1950-60 architectural styles such as Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Miami Modern (MIMO) style.

Do not forget Florida old style homes in Key West, like Ernest Hemmingway's home, a magnificent home in its day, decorated with French and Spanish furnishings. Key West also boasts the famous home of President Harry Truman; known as the Little White House. This is a Victorian style home in which many of our presidents visited. Key West is well known for the conch house style, introduced by the immigrants from the Bahamas. The conch house is an architectural home style using native conch shells, timber framing, low gabled roofs and large porches.

In Sarasota, John Ringling, of the Ringling Brothers Circus, built an Italian Renaissance style mansion modeled after a palace in Venice, Italy.

The Tampa Bay Hotel, located in Tampa, was built by Henry Plant, the railroad mogul. This hotel also uses Spanish Moorish revival architecture.

Old Florida also included mid-19th century Florida classic-revival plantation home styles like the Gamble Plantation house in Ellenton, the only surviving antebellum mansion near St. Petersburg.

Florida old style homes not only had some of the most magnificent, elegant old world hotels; it also had some laid-back, simple homes. One of the most familiar is the Florida Cracker vernacular style home that reflects green design by using local natural resources and is designed to withstand the Florida environment.

These homes were comfortable in the Florida heat since they were built off the ground so cooling air could circulate around them. They also had high peaked tin roofs to reflect the heat, shady wrap around porches with extended roof lines and lots of windows for cross ventilation. The Cracker house, now dubbed "Cracker Chic", is making a comeback in the south with modern developments.

The next time you travel in Florida, why not take a side trip to some of these historical treasures? Better yet, take the scenic Old Florida Heritage Highway, rich in natural beauty where you can observe pastoral countryside and explore historical Florida old style homes like the Cracker home of the famous writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in Cross Creek, an environment that attracts writers, poets and artists. A place that will restore you spirit and refresh your soul. Happy travels!

Free Places to Visit in Orlando, Florida

What comes to mind when someone mentions the action-filled location of Orlando, Florida, and the surrounding areas? Do you think of having your kids meet Mickey Mouse and other Disney Characters at any Walt Disney World theme park? Do you conjure images of the themed area at Universal's Islands of Adventure, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Do you bring up pictures of Elmo meeting Shamu at SeaWorld Orlando?

Let's face it -- all the excitement and family fun of the theme park capital of the world is expensive. If you go to any theme park in the area, be it Epcot or SeaWorld Orlando, chances are that you'll pay for more than the admission tickets and seasonal or annual passes. You pay parking fees, meals (including many breakfasts where you take pictures of your relatives and their favorite cartoon characters), and souvenirs that are too materialistic. Water parks also work that way too: unless you stay at a resort with one, you pay for the admission and parking if it has a fee. You may be wondering if there's anything in Orlando that is completely free -- somewhere where you don't have to pay at the gate or booth. My friend, there are great places worth visits that suit your above needs.

The Epcot Resorts Area: around the borders of placid Crescent Lake lie the resorts that are just a mere walk away from Epcot, where its signature globe of Spaceship Earth can be visible without paying to actually get there. Feel free to park on any parking lot of any resort, take a stroll, and admire the beauty of each hotel. If you love free entertainment and love taking pictures, head on over to Disney's Boardwalk and watch some street performers like jugglers and clowns. I recommend that you visit during Christmas -- the decorations are worth many photo opportunities.
Downtown Disney: although it's regarded as a shopping mall, with stores, restaurants, and penny rides wanting your money, it's a free attraction of its own. If window-shopping is not your cup of tea, feel free to take pictures of the window displays, store signs, and buildings. Kids will love the interactive fountain play area to cool off on a hot day and the LEGO Imagination Center if they love building their own creations with blocks. Like the Epcot Resorts Area, Downtown Disney is a free place to visit at the Walt Disney World resort -- who says that everything is not free of charge?
Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe: if you are a Catholic and want to place a basilica in your vacation plans in Orlando, look no further than the eastbound edge of I-4. Just minutes away from the excitement of Walt Disney World and other Orlando area theme parks, this church is a haven for those who want peace and quiet or for those who want to commit to going to Mass if any day of their vacations falls on a Sunday. Marvel at the main church - it offers some of the best stained-glass windows that are guaranteed to dazzle you. Also, meditate in the Rosary Garden, look around in the gift shop, and take pictures of the surrounding greenery and fountains. If you either want to foster your Catholic faith or want to get away from all the hustle and bustle the Orlando area is known for free of charge, add this basilica to your vacation plans or just visit it.

Orlando may be expensive in so many ways: you hand out lots of money for meals, spa treatments, theme park prices, souvenirs, and much more. On the other hand, it offers places where you can just get in without paying a dime. I strongly recommend visiting those above places if you really want a change of pace from riding spinning rides, meeting crazy movie characters, and above all, spending way too much money.
