Take a stroll through Old Town Orlando

There is plenty to do in Orlando, but only go to famous theme parks, why not try something different on your next Orlando vacation. A walk in the city, the historic area of central district brings you face to face with history this important city of the face. Their migration may be concentrated in the historic eight blocks as a building, named in 1980 by the City of Orlando. The district is a consistent set ofBuildings, reflecting the Orlando commercial and governmental history.

The district is buildings built from 1880 until early 1940. Surrounded by modern skyscrapers, some 60 historic buildings in the area offer a glimpse of the city's past. The historic district designation has helped preserve the buildings were demolished or it may be due to the rapid growth and demand for commercial space in this boomingCity.

Orlando 's first historic district and shows the economic development policies of the city for over six decades. The district includes historic buildings such as warehouse, courthouse, bank, offices and commercial buildings. The styles are represented in the District, Queen Anne, Twentieth Century Commercial Style, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Mediterranean Revival, ArtArt Deco and Modern. Almost all the buildings are brick, through a series of fires at the end of 1800 that destroyed many wooden structures and prompted the city to move to new building standards.

Before Well'sbuilt Hotel, 511 West South Street

Dr. William Monroe Wells built the hotel in 1926. And 'accommodation provided for African-Americans during segregation, when rooms were not available to them in other areas. Manyfamous entertainers and athletes stayed here. Next, Dr. Wells South Street Casino, where many of the entertainers performed for the African American community. According to Dr. William Monroe Wells House, 519 West Street South

Dr. William Monroe Wells built this Foursquare style house on a plot in one block east in 1924. He was known as an American practice of Orlando's longest AfricanDoctors and was in the commercial and cultural life of the community with Well'sbuilt Hotel and the South Street Casino involved.

Third Victorian House & Cottage, 541 West Street South

The Victorian House and Cottage are among the only remaining Folk Victorian structures left in town. The level of detail of railings were found in the original columns and carved tunnel Orlando is not in other buildings.

Fourth Hankins Building, 647 South WestRoad

Dr. IS Hankins this Art Deco building built in 1947 commercial. Hankins was an early-century American physician and civic leader. It 'was an active participant in the Washington Shores development, the Americans have offered new opportunities for home ownership for Africans Orlando.

Fifth Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 701 West Street South

This African-American church was organized in 1919 and met in various locations until land was purchased. ChurchMembers of rusticated concrete blocks that were used for the construction of the walls. The Gothic church was built in 1921.

Sixth Ebenezer Methodist Church, 596 Church Street West

In 1892 this congregation had a wooden church on this site. It was the first African American Methodist Church in Orlando. Since 1922 the members built the brick church in Gothic style.

Seventh Slemons Department Store, 129 West Church Street

These dry goods store wasBuilt in 1924 for William Slemons. He is the first time in Orlando in 1886 Slemons and his sons owned a number of shops in downtown Orlando, from 1880 until well into the mid-twentieth century.
